Alan Mann Racing was commissioned in 1968 to take the newly homologated Escort racing, in highly tuned Group 5 form. The Formula 2 FVA engine was used, and special bubble wheel arches were fabricated to accommodate larger wheels. In house designer Len Bailey created a neatly packaged multilink rear suspension and even housed the steering rack in the engine crossmember. The AMR Escorts went on to be dominant in the 1968 British Saloon Car Championship, and duly won it for Ford with Frank Gardner driving.
The Championship winning car, registration XOO 349F, came runner up in 1969, and remains in the Alan Mann Racing collection. It is the most popular car Alan Mann Racing built, and still occasionally appears at events.
